Cuinn's Story

Nurturing critical thinking and global citizenship

Cuinn has been attending the Language Explorers workshops since COVID-19. Although he is now technically too old to participate in the Early Years programme, he is often seen ‘accompanying’ his little sister and continues to thoroughly enjoy the experience.
He particularly likes the story time section, where children share words from their own languages and listen to others do the same, learning new words and perspectives.

Cuinn’s family speaks English and Irish and places a strong emphasis on exposure to different languages and cultures from a young age, celebrating and enjoying the diversity around him.

Through attending multicultural events such as the Language Explorers workshops, Cuinn has developed a broader understanding of the world and the diversity within it. His parents have remarked on his increased curiosity, particularly in topics related to culture, language, and power. In a recent school assignment on Australia, he asked questions about Indigenous languages and power, engaging with ideas beyond what might typically be expected for his age.

Language Explorers workshops, alongside his family’s efforts, have played an important role in nurturing this curiosity by providing a space where different languages and cultures are given equal value. This has helped Cuinn develop a strong sense of respect and consideration for people from different backgrounds.

As his mother explains:

“I’m always trying to find spaces for my children and ourselves so that they are able to appreciate everybody. That they’re able to hear languages, and […] different cultures being given equal status in space. Growing up in a culture that’s predominantly white, predominantly English speaking, […] That is what’s most important and I want to make sure that for our family that’s not the values that we hold. So Language Explorers was a way that I could action that.”
