BABO resources

Bilingual And Bicultural Outlook

The BABO project’s main focus is teaching a second language in an innovative way offering educators and families new educational methodologies and digital resources for the early years based on the theory of multiple intelligences.

Multiple intelligence theory is gaining widespread recognition as a useful approach to ensuring that the diverse needs of all children are addressed. Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory emphasises children’s learning in eight different areas: visual-spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, linguistic, naturalistic, logical-mathematical, and bodily-kinesthetic (Gardner, 1988). Adopting a more ecological approach, the games and materials crucially need to have a choice of different activities to foster all intelligences, not just linguistic intelligences. The designers should consider building in elements of free play to the materials, crucially involving choice. Free play has been defined as a universal phenomenon that is highly observed during childhood years. (Rubin, Fein, and Vandenberg, 1983). It is internally motivated and is marked by children’s free choice of their own rules, place, and means of play and by a high level of active engagement.

Read more about multiple intelligences on page 13 of the BABO game system guide.
