Language Explorers and Capacitar

Language Explorers and Capacitar

In 2023 we received, for the second time, the International Protection Integration Fund (IPIF) from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) to deliver our Language Explorers Early Years programme throughout the year 2024.
Language Explorers Early Years offers a creative, multilingual space for young children and families to develop language and literacy through play and artistic engagement and to enhance resilience, inclusion and overall well-being. In the workshops, run by bilingual artists, children and parents engage in creative activities that have been carefully designed to promote language and communication skills and also self-expression, through a culturally-sensitive approach.

Thanks to our partnership with Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation we have been creating a special series of workshops targeting also families with a background of displacement.
The Glencree Centre played a pivotal role in training our Mother Tongues personnel and artists in the Capacitar method.
Capacitar (“empower” in Spanish) is an education programme that comprises a series of gentle, transferable body and energy-based practices to address stress and trauma symptoms in an empowering manner. The programme does not focus on the stories of participants. In this way, it ensures preventing re-traumatisation.
These practices include deep breathing, visualisation, Tai Chi, Finger holds and Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping) among others. These practices are available at no cost on the Capacitar International website (www. capacitar.org) and their YouTube channel. To learn more, you can also contact capacitar.ireland1@gmail.com

In 2005, Capacitar responded to Hurricane Katrina by putting together this kit of simple basic practices for immediate use to help people deal with challenging situations, such as natural disasters, violence or chronic stress. Since then it has been translated into more than 40 languages and used in countries after tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and areas of ongoing conflict. You can download the kit here.
